Within its caring and structured environment all children receive a full, basic education in reading, writing and mathematics along with art, craft, play, friendships, sharing and social skills, in line with EYFS regulations. This, together with an acquired good behaviour strategy, gives the children a head start in preparation for full time education at the Viking School or transfer into the state system.
Our pre-school department is an integral part of the main school and as such, is subject to inspection.
RECEPTION THROUGH TO YEAR 6
When children join the reception class a greater emphasis is placed upon literacy and number skills. It is here that each child begins to experience a wider range of curricular activities through a more structured timetable.
The school curriculum covers all the requirements of the National Curriculum, through experience of a wide range of subjects including Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Music, Art, Religious Studies, History, Geography, French and Information Technology. As a child progresses through the school a gradual increase is evident in all academic subjects, these include the addition of swimming lessons, recorder lessons, and verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
One of the schools main academic focus is to prepare pupils for the 11+ examination in Year 6, and as such our expectations and requirements gradually increase so that our children are well equipped to meet the demands made of them when sitting the exam.
Additional support and assistance is always available. Mediation between class teacher, parents and pupils ascertain whether a child sits the examination or if their attention would be better applied in other areas.
All pupils receive full reports at the end of the Autumn and Summer terms and one formal Parents Evening is conducted at the end of the school year. However, there are frequent opportunities throughout to meet your child's teachers. We operate an open-door policy and the Principal, Headteacher and class teachers are always available to speak to parents, usually without an appointment.
At the Viking School, we believe that children learn best within a settled, secure and friendly atmosphere. We endeavour to ensure that each child will learn and be happy whilst at the school and we certainly have high, yet attainable, expectations of the children both in their learning and behaviour.
